Physician Dispensed Skin Care Products.

What is the difference between skin care products sold in department stores/salons/pharmacies and those sold in medical practices?

The cosmetic industry is over saturated with products that promote sensational results but lack actual scientific evidence along with control studies to back up their claims. The main difference between over-the-counter products and products sold in a medical practice comes down to science vs marketing. While department store brands spend millions of dollars every year to market their products, many of them have little to no associated clinical science and offer minimal true value to patients while in comparison physician grade products can provide scientific research to support their claims.

Due to recent medical advancements we now have a much better grasp on how the skin actually ages and what active ingredients work best to slow down this process. Medical professionals are trained to closely evaluate these active ingredients and look to peer-reviewed evidence along with histological and scientific studies to select the best products to offer their patients.

Physician grade professional products are products that can only be sold thru a medical practice and are often times referred to as “cosmeceuticals” (meaning the union of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals). These cosmeceutical products provide a level of treatment that surpasses that of over-the-counter product lines. Even when OTC lines contain active ingredients, the medical formulations will have a much higher concentration and often times more stabilized version of these ingredients. There is a strong correlation between the concentration/stabilization of active ingredients and effective results. The higher the concentration, the better a product will work.

Additionally, in comparison to a department store salesperson, medical skin care providers have much more advanced training and knowledge on how to identify which products would be best for a patient’s particular skin type or skin care concern.
