Aesthetic Medicine and Top Cosmetic Procedures:
What is the goal of Aesthetic Medicine?: The primary goal of Aesthetic Medicine is to enhance a patients self-satisfaction by utilizing minimally invasive procedures aimed at maintaining a natural and healthy appearance. Thus allowing consumers to “look as young as they feel”, “look better for their age” or simply allowing them to “feel more confident” about themselves. Studies have found Aesthetic Medicine could actually have some real health benefits because individuals that feel good about the way they look tend to lead more productive and happier lives and can actually live longer.
Who is having it done?: Did you know that more than half of consumers are considering a cosmetic skin procedure in order to improve their appearance? According to survey data from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 52% of respondents are considering esthetic treatments and many of them are already doing it. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports more than 13.4 million minimally invasive procedures were performed in the USA in 2013.
What were the top 5 minimally invasive procedures performed last year?: #1 Botulinum Toxin (Botox -#1 Procedure 8 years running), #2 Soft Tissue Fillers (such a Juvederm & Restylane), #3 Chemical Peels, #4 Laser Hair Removal, and #5 Microdermabrasion.
With Botulinum Toxin (Botox) being #1, tell us what it is & how it works?: It is a very simple, few minute, procedure that can soften or eliminate facial lines and wrinkles. Botox is a neuromodulator that prevents or works to smooth out wrinkle formation by relaxing the muscles responsible for forming these lines. It typically takes 4-7 days from injection to start to work and 14 days to take full effect, lasting about 3-6 months. Botox is a quick, easy and affordable procedure that can provide dramatic results.
Some other considerations: Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures tend to be affordable, have minimal side effects and when administered properly will offer dramatic and extremely effective results. When undergoing any cosmetic procedure, remember, it is very important to use a highly trained, specialized, and extremely competent injector.

New Skin for a New Year:
Q: How can I achieve younger looking skin?
A: Through a combination of a good home skincare routine combined with targeted therapeutic in office treatments. Focus on products that contain active ingredients that are scientifically proven to slow down or reverse the aging process. Regular exfoliation treatments, daily application of a broadband SPF, using high quality topical vitamin C and applying hydrating serums containing hyaluronic acid are key elements in this process. Professional skincare treatments including facials, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning and chemical peels will help re-texturize you skin giving you a more youthful appearance. Micro-needling (collagen induction therapy) can assist in rebuilding collagen, helping to naturally correct wrinkles and sun damage.
Q: Why is it important to regularly exfoliate the skin or receive facials?
A: Every 4-6 weeks our bodies generate new skin cells. In order to assist in cellular turnover which allows the fresh/new cells to move up to the skin’s surface, we need to get rid of the older dead cells on top. If we don’t remove the old cells, skin will look dull, dry and worn out. By exfoliating these dead surface cells, we allow exposure of the new cells resulting in healthier/glowing skin.
Q: What type of exfoliants should I use?
A: A facial scrub or enzyme can be used 1-2 times per week. For dryer, tougher aging skin that is in need of more re-texturizing, a stronger exfoliant such as a professional strength retinol could be used. Be sure to purchase this product from a medical office because over the counter retinol products will not have enough active ingredients to give you optimal results. Retinols can be added to moisturizers a few times per week to build up your skin’s tolerance to them. A skincare professional can recommend the right exfoliant and the correct usage for your skin type.
Q: At what age should I start using anti-aging products?
A: I use vitamin C serums and broadband SPFs on my children to protect them against sun damage. The majority of our sun damage is done by the time we are 20 years old. You just can’t see it until our skin thins out when we get older. An active eye cream should be started in your 20’s. To slow down the appearance of aging, the use of active anti-aging serums should start in your late 20’s or early 30’s. It is a lot easier to slow down the aging process than to correct wrinkles once you have them.

Collagen Induction Therapy-A Safe, Cost-Effective Treatment for Stretch Marks, Acne Scars, & Wrinkles.
What is Collagen Induction Therapy & How Does it Work?
CIT is a simple, safe procedure that requires minimal downtime with significant, measurable, and sustainable results. The principal of CIT is to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen, thereby reducing wrinkles and improving skin texture. With the use of a microneedling device such as the Dermapen ™, fine needles pierce the skin at a rapid rate to create many microscopic channels deep into the dermis of the skin. This will initiate a natural healing process which will stimulate your body to produce new collagen. These channels also improve the penetration of topical antioxidants about 1000 times. Topical antioxidants stimulate skin renewal, thereby making the skin appear younger. Results can be similar to those of fractional laser treatments without the risks, downtime or costs associated with laser treatments.
How Many Treatments are Needed?
This will depend on the original condition of the skin and individual patient needs but, the average number of treatments usually range from 4-8. Sessions are spaced approximately 4 weeks apart.
What Changes can be expected with CIT?
CIT will make the skin appear smoother and more youthful. CIT can also create significant improvement with stretch marks and acne scars. There will also be an improvement in hyperpigmentation, brown spots, sun damage, facial wrinkles and skin texture.
How soon can you see improvement with CIT?
Because it takes your body awhile to stimulate collagen, CIT remodeling in normal skin takes approximately 90 days to see optimal results, so the effects of this treatment won’t be fully appreciated for several months after the procedure but the collagen stimulation will continue and the effects can last for up to 5 years in most people.

Physician Dispensed Skin Care Products.
What is the difference between skin care products sold in department stores/salons/pharmacies and those sold in medical practices?
The cosmetic industry is over saturated with products that promote sensational results but lack actual scientific evidence along with control studies to back up their claims. The main difference between over-the-counter products and products sold in a medical practice comes down to science vs marketing. While department store brands spend millions of dollars every year to market their products, many of them have little to no associated clinical science and offer minimal true value to patients while in comparison physician grade products can provide scientific research to support their claims.
Due to recent medical advancements we now have a much better grasp on how the skin actually ages and what active ingredients work best to slow down this process. Medical professionals are trained to closely evaluate these active ingredients and look to peer-reviewed evidence along with histological and scientific studies to select the best products to offer their patients.
Physician grade professional products are products that can only be sold thru a medical practice and are often times referred to as “cosmeceuticals” (meaning the union of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals). These cosmeceutical products provide a level of treatment that surpasses that of over-the-counter product lines. Even when OTC lines contain active ingredients, the medical formulations will have a much higher concentration and often times more stabilized version of these ingredients. There is a strong correlation between the concentration/stabilization of active ingredients and effective results. The higher the concentration, the better a product will work.
Additionally, in comparison to a department store salesperson, medical skin care providers have much more advanced training and knowledge on how to identify which products would be best for a patient’s particular skin type or skin care concern.
